Rate data compiled by Georgia Gas Savings, an independent comparison site, shows Constellation at 59.9 cents per therm, the lowest 12-month fixed rate among the state's five largest natural gas marketers.

Constellation is offering the lowest 12-month fixed natural gas rate among Georgia's five largest natural gas marketers, according to rate data compiled by Georgia Gas Savings, an independent natural gas comparison shopping site.

Constellation's 12 Month Home Natural Gas Plan is priced at $0.599 per therm. The company also offers a 24-month plan at $0.629 and a 36-month plan at $0.639.

The rates arrive as forecasters call for a strong El Niño winter. NOAA has an El Niño Advisory in force and puts the odds of a very strong event above 90 percent for the coming fall and winter, with the Southeast under the strongest part of the signal.

"El Niño tilts the odds, it doesn't set the thermostat," said Matt Oberle, COO of Georgia Gas Savings. "Nobody knows what this winter costs, including the people whose job it is to forecast it. A fixed rate is how you stop guessing."

Oberle said customers should start with the price per therm on their latest bill. "Some people here are on a variable rate that moves every month. Some locked in during a high-price year. Some rolled onto a holdover rate when a contract expired and never noticed. Find that number first, then compare."

Light-up season is also when Atlanta Gas Light's annual Dedicated Design Day Capacity recalculation hits bills, changing the fixed base charge no matter what supply rate a customer has locked in. Switching between Georgia gas companies does not interrupt service, and the change takes effect at the next meter read.

Georgia Gas Savings recommends reviewing full contract terms, including early termination fees, rather than the advertised rate alone.
